Community guidelines
This directory exists because trans and queer people in Portland kept starting job searches from zero. These are the rules we hold ourselves to in maintaining it, and what we ask of anyone who sends us information.
What earns a listing
An employer belongs here if they hire in the Portland metro area, hire at entry level or with a low barrier to entry, and have a careers page a person can actually apply through. That is the bar. It is deliberately low, because a short list of perfect employers is not useful to someone who needs work this month.
What we say, and what we refuse to say
We publish facts we can point at: an openings count and the date it was taken, a published HRC score, gender-affirming healthcare coverage, a stated LGBTQ employee group, a documented second-chance hiring program.
We do not publish a claim that an employer is safe, affirming or trans-friendly as an overall verdict. We cannot know that, and a promise we cannot keep is worse than no promise. A great policy and a bad manager can live at the same company.
What gets a caution flag
A specific, documented eligibility trap: not licensed in Oregon, requires residency in another state, sells a course rather than employing anyone, or a compromised website. Flagged entries stay visible rather than being deleted, because people find them anyway and the warning is the useful part.
What gets removed
- Employers who have stopped hiring in the metro area.
- Listings that turn out to be a fee-charging scheme aimed at job seekers.
- An employer who asks to be removed.
- Any listing where we learn of documented discrimination against trans or queer workers that the employer has not addressed.
Telling us something
Email jobs@werqt.org. The most useful reports are specific: which employer, what happened, and when.
You never have to identify yourself. We do not need your name to act on a broken link or a bad count, and we will not ask for details about your own situation in order to take a report seriously. If you do share something personal, we will not repeat it or publish it on a listing.
What we will not do
- Charge an employer for placement, or rank the list by who paid.
- Build an account system, or ask you to log in to see who is hiring.
- Pass your information to an employer.
- Publish a personal complaint in a way that identifies the person who made it.
If you are having a hard time
Job hunting while trans is exhausting, and it is not a personal failing when it goes badly. For crisis support, call or text 988, or reach Trans Lifeline at 877-565-8860. For housing, healthcare, legal and ID resources across Oregon, see Wayfinder.
